Choosing block paving for your driveway
Block paving gives you a choice of colours, laying patterns and borders, with individual blocks that can usually be lifted for repairs or access. Elgar works with homeowners in Worcester, Hereford and Cheltenham, as well as the surrounding areas. A survey is the starting point for choosing a surface and layout that suit your property.
Patterns, borders and everyday use
A herringbone layout, contrasting border or carefully cut curve can give the entrance its own character. Think about how cars turn and park, access to the front door and garage, and where paths meet the drive. Compare colours with the brickwork and other paving around your home. Our block paving inspiration gallery shows design ideas; these reference images are inspiration rather than a record of completed Elgar installations.
Preparation and drainage
The finished surface depends on what is underneath it. Excavation, a suitable compacted sub-base and secure edge restraints all need to suit the ground conditions and intended use. Existing levels, thresholds, access covers and the route taken by rainwater should be considered before the layout is agreed. Ask at your survey how drainage will be handled: ordinary block paving should not be assumed to be permeable.
What affects a block paving quotation?
The size and shape of the drive, chosen blocks, removal of the existing surface, access for materials, preparation, edging and drainage can all affect the work required. Share photographs and approximate dimensions when you enquire, then use the site survey to discuss the details. Comparing these items makes quotations more useful than comparing a headline price alone.
Looking after the finished surface
Clear leaves and debris, keep drainage routes clear and check the joints as part of regular care. Cleaning methods and joint maintenance should suit the blocks and jointing system used. Individual blocks can usually be lifted if a repair or access is needed; a settled or moving area should be assessed rather than simply covered over.
